A Pastoral Lay Assistant is a lay minisiter commissioned by the bishop to assist the Parish Priest in the pastoral work of the parish. This involves three main areas of ministry:
Pastoral Care
Visiting the sick, the bereaved, those who have lost their way in the church, etc.. Providing a sympathetic ear to anyone who needs it.
Catechesis.
Helping people to prepare for the sacraments and facilitating spiritual formation.
Liturgy.
Presiding at non-sacramental liturgies and giving reflections on the scriptures as appropriate, e.g. at Communion Services, Stations of the Cross, etc..
